The Australian Navy came to the rescue on Thursday last to airlift a young boy off Montague Island so he could attend the 60th Jubilee of cubbing in New South Wales held at Luna Park in Sydney last weekend. Ten years old Jeffrey Conley, son of Mr Bruce Conley (Montague Island Head Lighthouse keeper), is one of three “Lone” cubs who will cut the cake which will officially mark the cubbing movement’s 60th year. Lone cubs are unique in that the pack is made up of members who live in remote areas where it is impossible for them to travel to regular cub pack meetings. Strong winds and high seas had prevented Jeffery leaving the island by boat and the Defence Department was contacted for assistance. A helicopter picked him up and deposited him in Narooma from where several people assisted him to get to the Sydney event.
Member for South Coast, Mr John Hatton, has made a renewed appeal to the Minister for Transport to have a motor registry at Moruya. During the last financial year 3,269 motor transport related transactions were carried out at the Moruya Police Station. In fact, in the previous 6 month period approximately 592 police hours were taken up by motor transport transactions and this took no account of the enquiries which were very time consuming. At the moment, a policeman from Bodalla travels to Moruya one day each week to assist and, in addition, the police at Bateman’s Bay and at Bodalla, from their home bases, carry out licence testing. Once the test has been successfully passed the applicant has then to obtain the licence from the Moruya Police Station.
Mr Neville Gough of Narooma sustained a serious leg injury when a rescue craft overturned in Narooma bar on Saturday morning. A Narooma police report said that Mr Gough was instructing a crew member of Narooma Rescue Squad when a malfunction occurred in the motor. A wave struck and overturned the craft. Mr Gough was admitted to Bega District Hospital.
