Richardson and Wrench and M. O’Reilly conducted the sale of Bodalla Estate property on Wednesday. There was a fair attendance, but competition was not keen. The highest bid received being £3,000, the hotel was passed in for private sale. The store, cottage, and the company’s office was knocked down to Mr. W. Connors at £1,150. Koerber Bros., Narooma, brought the bakery for £450. The blacksmith’s and carpenter’s shops, building blocks and all the cottages were passed.
Through striking a dust hole while riding his motor bike a few miles out of town on Saturday night, the Rev. Ashby received a nasty fall, resulting in an injured knee cap and severe cuts on his legs. He was taken to the local hospital where his wounds were dressed, and he was able to carry out his duties the next day.
Our Shire President and Mrs. Flood had their newly painted and pretty homestead nestling in its lovely garden on the bank of the Moruya River razed by fire last Saturday evening. The house and all its contents were lost, and the inmates had only just escaped with their lives. It appears that Mr. and Mrs. Flood and their maid, had returned home about 11.30 when everything was apparently alright, all fires having been extinguished before their departure earlier in the evening. A crackling noise awakened Mrs. Flood and on arising discovered the house on fire. She quickly called her husband, and they then aroused the maid, the flames scorching Mr. Flood’s cheek as he ran through to the rear of the house. It was at once seen that the fire had a firm hold.
Mr. Flood rushed to the garage and managed to get his motor car through the passageway on to the road just as the flames burst through the side of the house. Within a short space of time the building was reduced to ashes. Although the house was insured, the policy will not cover the many valuables and articles with fond associations. The home was one of the most compact and comfortable in the district, containing a magnificent piano, a gramophone and many other pieces of valuable furniture. Much sympathy is expressed for their severe shock and great loss.
