The Bateman’s Bay Emergency Helipad was officially opened by Commodore Gordon Jervis, from H.M.A.S. Albatross, at a brief but spectacular ceremony last Wednesday. The Commodore arrived in a Navy Sea King Helicopter which performed the first official touchdown on the Pad. The helipad was funded by Bateman’s Bay Rotary Club and was originally planned for the hospital grounds, but the department of Civil Aviation declared the area unsuitable, due to some low-slung High Voltage wires on the approach to the site. It was then decided to build it alongside the river, not far from the hospital. The cost of the pad was about $1,500, and it is not only there for emergency cases, but for any helicopter wishing to land there.
Cr. Ken Mackay has been re-elected unanimously and unopposed as the President of the Eurobodalla Shire Council for the coming year. The cumbent Deputy President, Cr. Lance Smith, was also re-elected for another term. Cr. Mackay thanked other Councillors and Shire staff for their support and loyalty during the past year and said he was pleased to take on the position for another year. He opposed any move to increase the Presidential allowance and said he was content to leave it at $2,500 which Council then accepted.
Congratulations to Narooma Women’s basketball team who have run out the minor premiers in the “A” grade of the Shire basketball current competition. The team comprised Kay Lawrence, Bronwyn O’Neill, Alison McDonald, Vicki Warren, Jan Crisp, Marilyn Willoughby and Barbara Vaughan.
Margaret Greig, daughter of Mrs P. Greig of Kiora, and three lady companions, were welcomed in Moruya on Sunday morning with a family luncheon at Col and Dawn Dakin’s home. The four ladies are on the beginning of a caravan tour of Tasmania, and as one of the ladies is a mechanic, they do not anticipate car trouble. The trip will combine many opportunities for Margaret to paint as she is a top, well-known Foot and Mouth painter and is having great success with her work.
St. Stephen’s Church, Macquarie Street, Sydney, was the setting chosen for the wedding of Pam Green and Ken Mackay last Saturday. The couple, both of Moruya, chose the church in which Ken’s father, the late Dr. Mackay and mother Mrs. M. Mackay were married 48 years ago. A friend of Pam’s, Beverly Smith, was matron of honour and Ken’s cousin, Mr. Trevor Simpson carried out the duties of best man.
