The Eurobodalla Shire Council is to try to have a public telephone installed at the Narooma surf beach. Council is to make representations to the Member for Eden-Monaro, Murray Sainsbury, for the installation of a vandal-proof telephone at the beach as a means of alerting reserve services with a minimum of delay.
A burning off operation caused a blackout to Moruya and Moruya Heads residents on Monday, August 23. At 12 noon a high voltage pole in Church Street, Moruya, fell across the roadway causing the blackout. The pole had been damaged by fire during the burning off of grass on Gundary Oval, and it was still smouldering after it fell. The short circuit caused high volage wire on the corner of the Princes Highway and Albert Street to burn off, further delaying the outage. The supply was restored at 3.20 p.m.
The unremitting efforts of the Bateman’s Bay Community Library Committee, which was formed in May, have culminated in the opening on August 24, of a lending library located in the Swimming Club Rooms, opposite Mackay Park near the Bowing Club. Already over 1,700 books have been catalogued, with another 1,500 to be available when additional shelving has been completed. The library is being conducted by volunteers and will initially open on Monday’s and Thursday’s from 11am to 2pm. Joining fees are $5 for adults and $2 for children, and borrowing fees are 10 cents a book. All funds collected will go to the purchase of new books.
A minor flood occurred in Vulcan Street, Moruya, last week, when a water main burst on the approach to the bridge. At first the water lapped the edge of the footpath of the eastern side and made gaining entry to vehicles extremely hazardous unless your feet were equipped with flippers. It was a good test for the new curb and guttering and it passed with flying colours. Council workmen were soon on the scene and fixed the break expediently.
