Ablaze with lights from the multi-colored Chinese lanterns dotted about the verandahs and grounds, Miss Mary Boot’s pretty homestead at Yarragee [Moruya] presented a charming picture in the silvery moonlight on Monday night. Indoors the spacious rooms, adorned with huge bowls of Iceland poppies, golden daffodils, and gum tips, were filled with a festive party who had assembled to assist in furthering the candidature of the hostess in the C. E. Queen Competition.
Messrs. H. W. Luck, H. Williams and A. W. Constable successfully carried through their task of conducting a euchre tournament in which 76 took part in various rooms, whilst to Edison music about 20 couples tripped “the light fantastic” on the large verandah. Many others contented themselves by sitting before cosy fires and watching their friends make merry. After a lovely hot cup of tea, and the most delectable sandwiches and cakes, the large crowd returned to their homes thoroughly satisfied with their night’s enjoyment.
Mr. A. J. Constable, of Gundary [Moruya], met with an extremely painful accident on Tuesday, when he tore the muscles of his leg from the thigh to the knee. The patient was in such agony that the doctor found it necessary to inject morphia and place the leg in splints.
Mr. T. M. Shakespeare, M.L.C., and general manager of the Country Press Co-operative Co. of Australia Ltd., is starting a newspaper at the Federal Capital, to be known as the “Canberra Times.”
Mr. and Mrs. G. Mercer, two of our former popular citizens, who went to live in Sydney about 12 months ago, returned on Friday to once again take up their residence amongst us. Mr. Mercer did not enjoy good health whilst in the city, and acting on the doctor’s advice, he decided to come back to his native climes.
By the erection of a good strong paling fence on her allotment, Mrs. Carden has improved the appearance of Page Street, as well as bringing the property into line with others in that thoroughfare.
There must be money in the “rag” business. No less than four salesmen with costumes, etc., travelling per motor (one man and woman being ensconced in a smart Oldsmobile coach) were doing the town on Tuesday.
The three-mile bicycle road race, which eventuated on Saturday last at Bateman’s Bay, was won by Eric Fenning.
