Concern for the safety of swimmers at Bateman’s Bay has prompted a meeting to be called with the intention of forming a Surf Lifesaving Club. A Canberra club has operated a patrol most weekends, but due to distance and a falling off of members, concern is now being felt for beach users. The meeting will be held at the Mariner’s Lodge at 11am this Sunday and it will be attended by representatives of the New South Wales Centre and Far South Coast branch of Surf Lifesaving.
At the annual meeting of the Moruya Hospital Auxiliary Miss Peg Tacon, the retiring president, reported that it had been a very successful year for the Auxiliary, with the furnishing of the new children’s ward, supplying money for a Coronary Care Unit, and the purchase of a microwave unit. The big event of the year was the opening of the hospital kiosk.
Forty tons of wood in three hours, was cut by seven hard-working men with chainsaws last weekend. The wood was for use at St. Mary’s school, Moruya, and was cut from the property of Mrs Marie Mylott of Congo Road.
The death occurred recently, at the Moruya Hospital after a long illness, of Dave Laverty, a former hairdresser of Nowra and Moruya. He was 61 years of age and was well known in the district for his dance band and was an accomplished pianist himself. He is survived by a daughter, Cherie, who lives in England at present, and his son, Bob, who carries on the hairdressing business in Moruya.
Member for Eden Monaro, Murray Sainsbury, has achieved some success on the Moruya Heads telephone problem. Major cable work costing in excess of $117,000 should be completed by October next and telephones at Moruya Heads connected shortly after.
William Joseph Pollock died in the Moruya District Hospital Sunday July 25. A son of the late Patrick and Alice Pollock of Mogo, Bill, as he was popularly known, was the fourth child of a family consisting of eleven sisters, and one brother. His brother and 2 sisters have predeceased him. He married Jessie Hunt of Moruya, and they had a family of 3 sons and 1 daughter. Alma, Paddy, Brian and William, and 11 Grandchildren.
In his early days Bill was a keen sportsman, and played Rugby League. He will be remembered as an outstanding Axeman and throughout his life he followed the timber industry. He managed the Moruya Gold Mines in the early 40s and from there he accepted a position with the Moruya District Hospital, taking care of the Steam Boilers and general needs of the Hospital, until his retirement. He was buried yesterday following a service at the Sacred Heart Church, Moruya.
