Butchers’ shops are to close two half-days – Wednesdays and Saturdays – in future, instead of one half-day as heretofore.

Through the failure of the electric lighting plant at the local Hospital, a special meeting of the committee was held on Monday night, when it was decided to renew the batteries. As the cost will be £50, the management has applied to the Minister for Public Health for permission to draw on the building fund, which is at fixed deposit, for that amount as a loan.

On Monday morning last Mr. Jack Preddey had a miraculous escape from death. As he was coming from his home on his motor bike, he and Mr. Jack Louttit, jnr., who was driving an Overland car, collided at the intersection of Page and Campbell Streets. The impact threw the bike-rider heavily to the ground, and from what we can glean, the car swerved, carrying the bike and Jack onto the footpath and then crashed into the Post Office fence. When everything was untangled, it was found that Jack was severely cut about the head, legs and feet, with bruises about the body, his bike considerably smashed, the car’s mud guard badly bent and a tyre burst, and a panel of fencing knocked down. Mr. Jack Louttit escaped with a severe shock. When the collision occurred, the noise caused by the bursting of the cars and bike’s tyres drew everyone within the vicinity out of their homes.

Mr. P. Egan, of Bateman’s Bay, who, 84 years ago, was born on the site that Dorman, Long’s busy hive of workers are quarrying granite for the North Shore Bridge, was in Moruya on Tuesday looking as fit and well as a man half his age. Mr. Egan was one of our Shire’s live Councillors, and now despite his weight of years, is, with others, actively working in the endeavour to get a railway from the Bay to Canberra. Mr. Egan says that if they do not succeed this time they will try, try again.

At Bodalla on Sunday morning last, two of Mr. C. Constable’s young children, Elsie, aged 5, and Charlie, aged 2, were badly scalded owing to a hook on which was suspended a kerosene tin of boiling water straightening, and thus allowing the tin to upset. Both children were immediately taken to a Moruya doctor, where after treatment, Charlie was able to return home and is now practically well again. Elsie’s burns were more severe and she is now doing well in the Moruya Hospital.
