50 Years Ago – 7 July 1976

Mr. John Nash, the Chief Executive Officer of the Bateman’s Bay Hospital has reported the compulsory retirement by age of Mrs. U. I. Lawrence as a Director of the hospital. Mrs. Lawrence has served for twenty-four years and in that time has rarely missed a Hospital Board meeting.

Late last Wednesday motor cyclist Michael James Cooper, 18, of Luck Street, Moruya, was travelling east in Campbell Street when, at a street corner, he collided with a motor lorry. He was thrown through the air from his machine and landed heavily to the ground sustaining possible internal injuries, and a fractured right leg. He was conveyed to Moruya Hospital and then transferred to Bega Hospital for specialist attention. The Navy at H.M.A.S. Albatross in Nowra were called to assist in his transfer to Prince Henry Hospital in Sydney. A Navy Sea King helicopter was despatched and conveyed the youth to Sydney where his condition was described as serious.

Bateman’s Bay Soldier’s Club was suitably decorated for the Moruya Masonic Deb. Ball when twelve delightful young ladies and their partners made their debut to Rt. Worshipful Bro. S. M. Jeffree and Mrs. Jeffree from Blakehurst, Sydney. The flower girl was Sharon Brown and the Matron of Honour Mrs. Chris Hopkinson. The Debs and their partners were Sue Philpott and Peter Hazell, Kerry Windus and Lindsay Brennan, Gabrielle Nader and Stephen Innes, Kathie Bush and Terry Bush, Janine Mathieson and Stephen Baghurst, Heather Hare and Bruce Cameron, Karen Freebody and William Folder, Margaret Dallas and David Whipp, Shirley Briggs and Kevin Heffernan, Julie Ann Reid and Ian Buchanan, Dawn Brown and Greg Simpson, Kathie Chapman and Richard Taylor.

Cheryl Sutherland will be the guest of honour at a tea next Saturday night. Cheryl is going on an overseas trip to Canada and leaves on the 11^th July. We wish Cheryl a good trip.

For the month of June, $1.5 million worth of building applications were dealt with by Eurobodalla Shire Council, a rise of approximately $½ million over June 1975. A drive through Broulee, Mossy Point and Batehaven shows the standard of buildings now in course of construction, and a great number of these look to be for permanent residents. There is also a strong demand for flats and self-contained units indicating a good tourist potential. With so much being approved in a Shire the size of Eurobodalla, the economy of the area must be particularly sound.
