50 Years Ago – 1 July 1976

Following an address to the Moruya Rotary Club by Mrs Browne, Head Teacher of Secretarial Studies at the Nowra Technical College, it was decided to accept Rotarian Graham Vidgen’s offer to serve on the Technical Advisory Committee of the College which meets in Nowra every two months. Mrs Browne said it was the wish of the Advisory Committee to extend the full time Day Secretarial Course into the Eurobodalla. These classes could be functioning here at the beginning of next year if there are satisfactory numbers of students registering to participate. Mr Vidgen will be the go between and be able to keep both the College and the local community informed on Technical Education needs.

His Honour, Mr. Justice J. McKeon will be the guest speaker at the General Meeting of the Eurobodalla Historical Society when it next meets and he will recount some of his early childhood in Moruya and trace back his ancestors, one of whom was Francis Flanagan, the first settler in the district.

The death took place on Saturday 26th, June, at Sale in Victoria of a well known Moruya resident, Anthony John ‘Tony’ Keating. Tony, who was fifty-nine years of age at the time of his death, is reported to have taken his long service leave, and left on a motor trip to Victoria. He took ill at Sale and was admitted to hospital. Unfortunately, he did not respond to treatment and last week his condition deteriorated, resulting in his death. His funeral took place yesterday, after prayers, at 3.30 p.m.

The two-day display staged by the Bateman’s Bay and District Horticultural Society at the Bateman’s Bay Bowling Club was an outstanding success particularly as it was the first such event put on in the Bay. Flowers, shrubs, cacti and pot plants of all descriptions were exhibited by members and friends of the Society and occupied the full length of the Auditorium providing plenty of colour and variety. All dining tables also had small bowls of flowers. Donations went to the local Miss Australia Quest entrant, Miss Loraine Patrech, in aid of the Spastic Centre of N.S.W., but the final amount is not yet known.

Narooma Bowling Club was the venue for the Apex District Convention last weekend. A Narooma man, Alan Wilson, was voted in as the new District Governor. Moruya’s John Nader was appointed District Sporting Director. Bateman’s Bay made its mark by winning the debating contest, while Ian Tulloch of Narooma won the public speaking award. There was a good attendance, with nearly ninety Apexians and their wives turning up from the district.
