Quarry Workmen 1926

Dormon Long and Co., contractors for the North Shore bridge, have intimated to their employees that they will pay 44 hours’ wages to those who want to work 44 hours and for 48 hours to those who are willing to work the longer hours.

Driven by that reliable chauffeur, Mr. Allan Louttit, Mesdames W. J. Stephens, C. Cheesman, Miss Cheesman, and Messrs. W. J. Stephens, H. J. Thomson, H. J. Parbery and Wally Thomson visited Canberra. Leaving here on Sunday morning the party returned Monday night, having had a delightful trip through Queanbeyan and the Federal City.

“Go to Blazes” – Frederick Stephen Wells wrote to the Eden-Monaro Federal returning officers, “defying your official and political castes, despite your command of gaol hells,” and again, “for my part, official and political parasites can go to blazes.” Defendant said it was against his conscience to vote. He was fined 5s, with costs, or 48 hours. He will appeal.(He was a farmer from Bungonia)

To be called “talkative” is a reproachable epithet. To be considered a thinker is indeed a compliment. So, think much, and talk little.

Butterick Patterns 1926

The medical officer for London schools warmly praises the disappearance of such devices as corsets and garters, and points out that the health of girls has been immeasurably improved thereby. A Harley-street specialist says: “Short skirts and short hair are the greatest boon to women-hood. Headaches are practically non-existent among shingled women. When they cut their tresses short, they add five years to their lives, and when they reduce clothing, they added another five. Men could do the same if they abolished collars and ties.”

A linen tea was organised for Tuesday afternoon at the Centennial Hall to replenish the press at the local hospital. The contributions handed in were of the best, the all-necessary towel predominating. Mesdames Cheesman, Anderson, S. Ryan and Matron Constable received the gifts and Mrs. H. Williams conducted an interesting competition in which each person had to draw an animal. The pictures were then pinned on the wall, and the competitor who correctly named the most was awarded a prize. Mrs. S. Lizieri proving herself the most clever was presented with a box of chocolates.
