NSW versus Victoria power boat regatta was held at Narooma’s Lake Corunna on Sunday. Spectators witnessed a near disaster when the Victorian boat Apollo, owned by Mr R Hodgson and driven by Mr R Wallace, smashed its hull near the finishing line and sank within seconds. Apollo was travelling at 75 km/h approaching the finish when it suddenly swerved sideways and people jumped to their feet in dismay as pieces of debris flew into the air. The boat had “taken off” and parts of its wooden hull had disintegrated under the impact as it smacked down hard on the water.
Mr Wallace was quick to turn off the motor before the stricken boat could get completely out of control and climbed onto the bow as it reared out of the water and the stern took a dive to the lake bed. The half-submerged boat was towed back to shore. The regatta, organised by the Narooma Aquatic Club, had a record number of entries for its 15 events and Apollo’s break-up was the most dramatic incident in a day of real thrills.
Bateman’s Bay Bowling Club’s men’s fours championships went into the semi-finals on Saturday with A. Devlin, J. Butcher, C. Bede and W. Fawcett defeating G. Ferguson, L. Hall, E. Fenning and R. Ladmore 40-4. W. Fawcett’s team will meet a team skippered by J. Brumby. The winners will meet J. Crices team for the title.

Retired Canberra Master builder John Belich bought the old council dredge and has spent hundreds of man-hours restoring it from a rusty hulk to a sharp looking craft. He has restored it in order to remove silt from the Moruya river to use as fill for his caravan park project. Mr Belich has been delayed, but still hopes to have at least part of his 300-site caravan park operating before the summer holidays this year.
One could almost say the cat got amongst the chickens at Moruya Golf Club on Saturday. This cat did get one chicken and in doing so won the Toby Donnelly event, the “B” grade handicap and a golf ball – and lost four strokes off his handicap to boot. Congratulations to Arthur Foster for a good effort. Michael Flynn shot a 78 and R. Corby an 87, to win the respective “A” and “B” scratch events. Other “cats” to get amongst the chickens were. R. Chesher, W. Louttit and J. Kennedy.
