100 Years Ago – 24 April 1926

A long-felt want in Moruya is being supplied by Mr. Alfred Heideman, who has opened a watchmaking and jewellery repair shop in the premises next door to the Premier Butchery.

On Wednesday last a pretty wedding was celebrated at Mogo by the Rev. E. E. Ashby (Methodist) when Mr. Ormond Sidney Veitch was married to Miss Queenie Francis Stephens.

Mr. J. Wilton has purchased Mrs. H. Flynn’s blacksmithing business in Vulcan St., the doors of which will be opened in his own name on Monday next. Mr. Wilton has for a number of years been Mr. Leo Walker’s capable assistant.

Mr. T. J. Hagon, representing Hagon Bros., tailors, of Oxford St., Sydney, notifies that he will be in Moruya during the next few days.

Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Hawdon, who have for the past few years been residing at Killara, are returning to Moruya, and will live in the Methodist Parsonage.

A rather overloaded Mail car – Araluen to Moruya

On Monday last the Moruya-Bega mail car and a motor lorry collided on a turn the other side of Tilba. By the prompt action of Driver Hapgood in swerving the mail car, a serious accident was averted. As it was, one of the passengers, Mr. C. Keating, had a small bone broken in his hand and a severe knock on the side of his head, and the driver’s wife received a few cuts and abrasions. The lorry, which struck the car side on, fared the worst, being badly damaged.

On Saturday night a pretty wedding was celebrated by Rev. G. A. Sanders in St. John’s Church when John Heycock and Miss Ada Backhouse, of Nelligen, were united in the holy bonds of matrimony. The bride was attired in white silk and braided trimming, with hat to match, and she carried a bouquet of roses and asparagus fern.

At Narooma there was a well-attended meeting of district wireless enthusiasts at the residence of Mr. George Thomson on Thursday evening. Mr. Thomson, who is well-known in radio circles, convened the meeting to discuss the alleged unsatisfactory reception of the new super station of Farmers Ltd (2FG). The interest in radio was instanced by no fewer than 25 licensed holders submitting their views. It was decided to form “The Narooma and Far South Coast Radiolists’ Association” to embrace South Coast listeners.
