Fishing Float in Easter Fiesta

The Easter parade, sponsored by the Bateman’s Bay Chamber of Commerce, at the Easter Fiesta last Saturday, was an outstanding success. Committeeman, Mr. Bob Cunningham, said 45 entries were received with 95 merchants and organisations donating money and merchandise vouchers totaling $2,234. Prizes for parade floats, children’s competitions, and other events were judged by the former premier of NSW and now Minister for Local Government, Mr. Tom Lewis.

The Moruya Historical Society has received a grant of $1,300 from the State Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation to assist with the cost of employing a person to update and classify historical records and data. The Society is to contribute a similar amount to the employment of a suitable person.

A Turlinjah man is recovering in Moruya District Hospital after falling from a 20ft. embankment at Turlinjah on Tuesday morning. The Moruya branch of the Far South Coast Ambulance Service attended the accident which was on the Prince’s Highway. Mr. William Newman suffered a suspected broken pelvis and head injuries.

An additional electrocardiograph machine has recently been purchased for the Bateman’s Bay Hospital by the ladies’ auxiliary at a cost of over $970. The members and their many helpers are to be congratulated on such a fine effort.

Gardeners from Tuross Heads, Bateman’s Bay, Moruya, Batehaven and Narooma attended a special meeting in Moruya last week in order to form a Garden Club. The club hopes to promote garden exhibitions and competitions in the three ridings of the Shire, as well as start an annual flower display in aid of the Moruya Mardi Gras. Contacts in each town are Mr. Wally Walker, Narooma; Mr. Doug Gordon, Moruya; and Mr. Bill Girling, Batehaven/Bateman’s Bay.

Mrs. Edith Warren, longtime resident of Campbell Street, Moruya, died last week. Edith was born in Bega in 1908, and was a member of the Sirl family, who were amongst the earliest settlers in the Bega District. In 1930 she married Gordon Warren in Bega and the couple moved to Moruya. Mrs. Warren was a most active member of the CWA, and gave 20 years service to the Parents and Citizens Association. She was known to most Moruya High School students as the head examination supervisor at both the School Certificate and Higher School Certificate level. Edith was awarded life membership of the Moruya Historical Society. She is survived by her husband, Gordon, and daughters Margaret (Alder), Elaine (Foreman), and Judith (Davis).

Horst Jago, 44, of Nelligen, died when the old tractor he was driving back from the Easter Fiesta, had brake failure. To avoid hitting the car in front driven by his wife, he drove up an embankment in an attempt to slow down. However, the tractor went over the top of the embankment and somersaulted, landing on top of him.
