Shire-wide news extracts from the Moruya Examiner of 15 January 1916, provided by the Moruya & District Historical Society:

VITAL STATISTICS – Mr. Dixon, C.P.S., has kindly supplied us with the following statistics for the quarter ending 31st Dec., 1915 :- Births 12 males, 18 females; total 30. Deaths 8 males; 4 females; total 12. Marriages 10.

HONEY – Those who have been provident enough to keep a hive or two of bees on the premises have been amply rewarded by getting exceptionally heavy returns, every bee-box in this district, so far tested, being full to overflowing.

MOORE’S ALMANAC – This splendid almanac, which no business man nor householder should be without, of 1916, is to hand. It is now a very bulky compilation and contains all the information required in these hustling, up-to-date times. It has enclosed a colored map showing railways and travelling routes for coaches, etc., the distances of country towns from Sydney, and business guides.

POCKET MONEY FOR WOMEN IN HOBBIES – One of the interesting features of January “Everylady’s Journal” is the first of a series of articles showing Australian housewives how they may make money from their hobbies. It is proposed to show readers how to grow herbs and flowers, keep pigeons and poultry, and so on, with profit as well as pleasure. For example in, in this number readers are told how to grow flax and spin thread.

OUR CHEMIST – Mr. Weatherby, our local chemist, with his family and accompanied by Mrs. Geo. Constable, left on Tuesday to spend a short holiday with relatives and friends in the Yass district. Mr. Weatherby’s youngest daughter has been in poor health for some little time and it is hoped that the change will be of much benefit to her. During Mr. Weatherby’s absence his business will be attended to by a duly qualified chemist in the person of Mr. O’Halloran, of Sydney.

RECRUITING APPEAL – Quarter-Master Sergeant Donald, a returned soldier from the Dardanelles addressed a fairly well attended meeting in the Mechanics’ Hall on Wednesday night in the interests of the route march of “The Men from Snowy River” who are now en route to Sydney. As we have already said the attendance was fair, but, unfortunately, the audience was composed principally of aged and married men with a small sprinkling of ladies, the young men whom the appeal was intended to reach being conspicuous by their absence.

PERSONAL AND OTHERWISE –

– Mr. Fred Fallick, lately chauffeur for Dr. Quilter, is in camp, having joined the Light Artillery.
– Mr. J. Hansen purposes leaving for Sydney next week to be vaccinated prior to entering camp.
– Foreign cattle dealers attended Mr. Keating’s stock sale on Saturday in very large numbers.
– Mr. J. Staunton, jnr., of Congo, is now the owner of Mr. Hansen’s fine hackney and buggy horse Ray.
– Mr. W. McIntosh has taken over the Moruya Cordial Factory from Mr. Hansen and has moved into the residence connected therewith. Good luck, Billy.
– Mr. Smart’s family of Milton- 10 in number – paid Moruya a flying visit this week per Mr. Harrison’s special car. The party put up at the Royal Hotel.
– Miss Emma Brice, school teacher at Wagonga, and daughter of Mrs Fred Brice of “The Pines” Wagonga, is spending her holidays with her friends in this district.
– Private Hilton Crapp, son of Mr. C. Crapp, of “Dalmeny,” Bodalla, has been down on final leave to say goodbye to his parents and friends prior to sailing for the front on the 18th, when a contingent of 9,000 will be leaving.

TURLINJAH – Trooper W. Robinson who is leaving with the expeditionary force was home during the week prior to the expiration of his leave, was on Friday night the guest of honor at a social given by the residents of Turlinjah. Much credit is due to Mrs. E. Bown for her untiring efforts in bringing the movements to such a successful issue, also to Mrs Dennis, for her kindness in giving her piano for the evening. The hall was most tastefully decorated with flags kindly lent by Mr. D. Hutchison, Manager of the Bodalla Estate. A large number of people assembled to say goodbye to another of this district’s young heroes.

Seventeen 100 years ago booklets containing articles for the years 1899 to 1914 are available ($5 ea) from the Society’s rooms. Copies of local newspapers from the 1860s to date can be viewed at the Society’s Family History Research Centre (Ph 4474 3224) situated at the rear of the Museum in Campbell St. Moruya (www.mdhs.org.au).
