To find out the answers to these important questions and more, come along to the opening night of Moruya and District Historical Society’s exhibition It’s All About Hats on Friday, 6 November at 6pm. Look at our large collection of hats, the earliest being a velvet toque worn in 1911 as part of Mrs Ruby Newton’s going away outfit, as well as enjoying a glass of wine and some finger food.
This exhibition will showcase our extensive collection of men’s and women’s headwear and will also include accessories such as gloves and handbags. Hat boxes, racing trophies and jockeys’ silks will also be displayed. The exhibition will also feature historic photographs that show hats being worn a important social events in the very early 1900s.
We are also lucky to have a number of mail order catalogues in our collection and these will also be on display. We are also seeking stories and anecdotes about local events that feature memorable incidents involving hats.

The exhibition will be open for three weeks (during normal museum hours) and will close on Saturday 28 November
Because of the age and fragility of many of these hats, conservation and best practice storage is essential. All proceeds from this event will be used to purchase conservation and storage materials that will protect these hats and textiles so they can be enjoyed in the future.
