Shire-wide news extracts from the Moruya Examiner of this time in 1915, provided by the Moruya & District Historical Society:

ILLNESS We regret to hear that Mr John Underhill, A. R. Club’s popular secretary is still very ill in St. Vincent’s Hospital.       14/8/1915

DEATH – Mrs T. Underhill, snr, died at Bega a few days ago at the age of 91 years. Her funeral was one of the largest ever seen in the district.     14/8/1915

POSTAL – Something amiss somewhere. Two receipts from this office for public moneys, one to Narooma and the other to Mogo have miscarried.       14/8/1915

COMPULSORY – During the week ending 31 July, eight persons residing at Milton and Nerrigundah, were each fined 2s 6d and costs under the Compulsory Enrolment Provisions of the Commonwealth Electoral Act for failing to enrol.     14/8/1915

ACCIDENT – Whilst engaged as a chaff-cutter, on Thursday morning, an orphan boy named Solomon, in the employ of Mr. E. Heffernan, had the misfortune to completely sever the index finger of his left hand and part of the next by the blade of the machine.     14/8/1915

DIPTHERIA – This virulent epidemic has broken out at Tin-Pot, near Nerrigundah, a 3 year old child of Mr and Mrs Motby of that place having contracted it. Dr Lister of Cobargo attended the patient and ordered its removal to the Moruya Hospital. The father brought the sufferer as far as Bodalla on Sunday evening, when the estate manager Mr. Hutchison, at personal risk of contracting the contagion, brought out his motor car and conveyed the father and child into the Hospital the same night. On the following day the little sufferer was in a very critical condition but under the skilful treatment of Dr. Quilter and careful nursing of Nurse Constable was revived and is now on the way to recovery.     14/8/1915

SHIRE MEETING – The sanitary inspector’s report was received, and he was empowered to have the rubbish, which the townspeople had been thoughtless enough to deposit on the river bank, buried. It was decided to prosecute owners of straying stock. In reply to Cr. Hawdon, the President said that the new windmill for the swamp well had arrived.     14/8/1915

STOCK SALES – Mr. Thompson held a very successful sale of fat- cattle on Saturday for Messrs. M. and C. Keating. About 70 bullocks made the splendid average of £20 17s per head.   14/8/1915

ROLL OF HONOR – Word has just come to hand that Private A. Fuller, 5^th L. H. “Federal” N.S.W. has been wounded. He is a son of R. Fuller, of “Federal”, late of Bodalla, and nephew of Mr. G. Fuller of Narooma. Mr. J. Thompson who volunteered some 4 weeks ago from Narooma is at present ill in the Little Bay Hospital.     14/8/1915

BODALLA PROCESSION – Before going to press Mr. J. Brown (Secretary), asked us by ‘phone to announce that the procession at Bodalla on Wednesday next (Australia Day there) will start from the top of the village for the sports ground at 11 a.m. Moruya intends to be represented.     14/8/1915

SEND OFF – Mr Michael Keating having disposed of his interest in the Glenduart farm to his two sons, was given a great send off by the residents of the Mulllenderree resident on Monday night last. Our jovial friend, with his daughter, Amy, has retired to his private residence, opposite Mr Milne’s property, Mullenderree road, where all hope he may spend many happy days.     14/8/1915

CONVENT BALL – Lovers of the Terpsichorean art are reminded that the Convent Ball will be held in the Centennial Hall on next Wednesday night, 25^th inst. First class music and refreshments will be provided. As these functions are about the most successful held in the district and as this one is under the guidance of the indomitable fair secretaries, Mesdames J. Heffernan and G. Constable, we cannot conceive of its being anything other than a brilliant success.       14/8/1915

Copies of local newspapers from the 1860s to date can be viewed at the Society’s Family History Research Centre (Ph 4474 3224) situated at the rear of the Museum in Campbell St. Moruya (www.mdhs.org.au).
