One hundred years ago today – 27 September

Shire-wide news extracts from the Moruya Examiner of this time in 1913 , provided by the Moruya & District Historical Society:

MISSHAP – The popular salesman of the Bee Hive Store, Mr. Creighton Burns, had the misfortune during the week to have the top of one of his fingers taken off with the bacon slicing machine.  27/9/1913

NAROOMA – is far-famed for its picturesqueness  and luscious oyster, but judging by the galaxy of beauty that came from this pretty spot to the Masonic ball it should be as far-famed for the bewitching loveliness of its fair maidens.  27/9/1913

EXAMINATION – Our head teacher Mr. Egan, has kindly furnished us with the following results of the quarterly examination held at the local Public School: – Sixth class, Myrtle Colefax 1, Anna Egan 2; fifth class, Stanley Richards 1, Charlotte Louttit 2; fourth class, Geoffrey Harrison 1, Edith Ball 2; third class, Norman Parbery 1, Gladys Graham 2; second class, Doris Coppin 1, Dulcie Louttit 2; first class, Gwen Jeffery 1, Phil Crapp 2.  The following have secured scholarships tenable at the local Mechanics’ Institute for three months:  Myrtle Colefax, Anna Egan, Florrie Thomson, John Jeffery.  27/9/1913

DEATH – …Dead! No, not dead, only another fair young flower gathered from our midst and transplanted to bloom in the Realms of Light Above.  Early on Thursday morning the Great Reaper’s sickle cut off at the early age of 32 years Maggie, the dearly beloved wife of Mr. Albert Lynch, of Mullenderree, and second eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Hellams, of Mogo, the immediate cause of death being puerperal eclampsia.  Deceased was unconscious from the hour of her trial, and passed away without gazing upon the face of her first born babe or bidding her loved ones a last farewell on this terrestrial sphere.  Her illness was only four days’ duration and Dr. Quilter, Matron Marks and Nurse Katie Heffernan gave unwearied attention to the sufferer, but human skill and loving care was unavailing, and at 3.30 a.m. amidst the stifled grief of a husband, father, mother and sisters the spirit of a cherished wife and daughter returned to the God who gave it…. 27/9/1913

TRAMLINE – The manager, Mr. L. O’Brien, informs us that the Tomakin Sawmilling Company is constructing a tramline, 3 ½ miles in length, from the mill to Cabbage Tree Creek for the carriage of logs at a cost of £90 per mile.  27/9/1913

Fourteen 100 years ago booklets containing articles for the years 1899 to 1912 are available ($5 ea) from the society’s rooms.  Copies of local newspapers from the 1860s to date can be viewed at the society’s Family History Research Centre (Ph 4474 3224) situated at the rear of the Pioneer Museum in Campbell St. Moruya (mdhs.org.au).
