50 Years Ago – 2 April 1976

The “Examiner” rain recorder and weather watcher, Vic Bonnet, reports that over 500mm (20”) of rain was recorded for the month of March. The rainfall for this year is already over 600 mm (30”) making it a relatively wet one. Vic has lived in the district for the past 32 years and figures that in another three he’ll be considered a real ‘local.’ A joiner by trade, he worked for Moruya builder Jack Brown till 1969 before taking a job in building supply sales until 1973, when he retired. He has been taking rain records since 1962.

The Eurobodalla Shire Council has made available funds for the installation of a sea rescue siren at Narooma. The siren is to be provided at the Bushfire Brigade building at a cost of $460.

The Electoral Commissioner for NSW advised today of the abolition, for State electoral purposes, of Turlinjah polling place in the Moruya subdivision of the South Coast District. Alternative polling places are available at Tuross Head and Bodalla.

Narooma Amateur Swimming Club is seeking donations to the value of $600 to enable two club representatives to travel to New Zealand as part of the NSW Representative team. The two representatives are Mitzi Faulder and Bruce Carr. They are competing in Sydney this week in the High School Swimming Championships along with Lorne Taylor, Cathy Oliver and Leanne Lomas.

At Moruya Surf Club last Saturday morning in pouring rain and rough surf conditions, 5 new club members sat for and passed examinations for lifesaving awards. The qualifying certificate was awarded to Vincent and Mark McHugh, Roger Gordon and Steve Pelcer. The highly respected Bronze medallion was awarded to one of the clubs’ Canberra members, Anthony Hanson, and Ian Anderson was awarded his Instructor’s Certificate.

At Moruya Pony Club’s AGM, president Mr. Phil Price congratulated the younger members on a very successful year and made special mention of the four young riders who competed at western shows with major success. These were Ian and Graeme Hughes, Matthew Price and Brett Jones. Mr. Price said what a great honour it was for the club to have Ann Jeffrey selected to represent Australia at the Inter-Pacific competition, held in America last August. Ann was the most successful member of the Australian team, returning with three awards.

Young Moruya first grader, Greg Simpson, has been selected to represent a combined Group 16 and 19 Junior team to play Group 8 in Canberra this Sunday. Greg, who is 17 years old, is the only Moruya player to gain Group honours this year and will be missed in the first-grade team side which meets Merrimbula away from home this Sunday.
