Violent seas and local flooding apparently caused little serious inconvenience to shire residents last week. The Moruya Surf Club maintains its somewhat precarious existence after surviving another onslaught from heavy seas last Thursday night. However, by Saturday, board-riders were making the most of the conditions and those hardy enough ventured out to tackle the five to six metre waves.
Bill Burns, of the Bay Trading Co., had an unnerving experience when his two-ton game fishing boat, ‘Jerupa,’ broke its moorings and headed for the open sea during the cyclonic conditions last weekend. Luckily the boat snapped the small mooring block and because of its weight the bow was kept pointed to the oncoming waves. It then washed on to rocks below Observation Point and was in danger of breaking-up. The only solution was to pull it up the face of a 30 metre vertical cliff with the winch of a timber jinker. The boat was winched up the cliff and left suspended overnight as it was too dark to continue the operation. It was successfully retrieved the next day with only superficial damage.

Ann Jeffries, the Moruya girl who represented NSW and Australia in showjumping in the United States last year, discovered this week that her horse, “Edington,” would have to be destroyed. While she was exercising the seven-year-old gelding, he went sore and quickly became lame, but no one could explain why he had broken his leg. “Edington” had given Ann many placings in dressage and cross-country events throughout the State.
A fire at Dalmeny last Monday could have been very serious but for the prompt action of Miss Colleen Clarke, Post-mistress, who notified the fire brigade and within minutes of the siren sounding, all members were at their stations doing the job they had been trained to do. The fire was soon brought under control. The cause of the fire, which broke out between Noble Parade and Creswell Parade, is unknown.
