100 Years Ago – 7 November 1925

Little Miss Eunice Heffernan, of Yarragee, was the holder of the “Popular Girl” ticket No. 1809, and gained the half guinea prize.

Amongst the list of those who passed the recent theory examination conducted by the State Conservatorium of Music are the names of Lelia Jenner, Florence Bartlett, and Marie Preddy. With their teacher, Mrs. A. H. Preddy, these young girls are to be congratulated on their meritorious achievement.

Queen Street householders have commenced to improve the appearance of that thoroughfare. Mr. M. Keating has had a fine substantial balcony erected in front of the premises in which he resides. His house occupied by Dr. McCredie and Mr. Moir has also been repainted. If the Shire Council would only place the streets and footpaths in decent order, owners might do a little more renovating to their shops and dwellings.

Remarkable escapes from death were experienced on Tuesday night by Mr. Frank Dawson, of Bombala, and Mr. A. Sutherland, of Yourie, when their car toppled over an embankment about three miles this side of Narooma and somersaulted two or three times before it reached the bottom. Balmain’s service car was on its way to Moruya when the driver noticed a light down the gully. Thinking that it was the tail light of a car, and that he heard someone calling, the driver investigated and found the two men pinned beneath the car. Just then, Mr. Harry Duncan came along and lent a hand in extricating the victims from their dangerous position. They were immediately brought in to Moruya, where it was found that they had fortunately escaped with only a severe shaking and abrasions. Mr. Sutherland, who was on his way to the Shire Council meeting, returned home on Wednesday. The car was considerably damaged.

Nerrigundah. (From our Correspondent) During the week end Narooma entertained the Nerrigundah Cricket Club in the first return match of the season. The meeting of these two clubs always attracts a large crowd at Narooma due to the sporting spirit displayed by both teams. Narooma scored 164 runs and so defeated Nerrigundah 136 runs.

Bodalla. (From our Correspondent) Mr. J. Brown and Rev. J. Campbell were supervisors at the High School and Bursary examination held in the local school. There were two candidates from the Eurobodalla school, three from Turlinjah, and five from the local school. Two were Bursary candidates and some were candidates for the West Scholarship; Mr. Burbidge arrived back from Sydney last Sunday morning bringing a new Reo speed truck. He also brought a family from England who will work on his Bodalla Farm. I understand that Mr. Burbidge will shortly take over from the Bodalla Co., the milk delivery to the village.
