Author Talk: The Scotland Letters – Dreams, Hopes, and Struggles

This book presents a collection of 45 letters written between 1859 and 1872 by family members in Scotland to John and Elizabeth Waddell.

These heartfelt letters, transcribed by Beverley Irving and Christine Greig, provide a unique window into the lives of those left behind, their hopes, dreams, and everyday struggles.

Beverley and Christine are both direct descendants of John and Elizabeth Waddell and their children who migrated from Scotland in 1838, and moved to Glenduart north of Moruya. Ultimately they settled in the Priory at Bingie.

When Ken Greig, John Waddell’s great grandson, was asked by his sister to dispose of an old suitcase full of documents found at the family home, he decided to look at them before taking them to the tip. He sorted the letters and they were then passed onto his daughters Beverley and Barbara.

Beverley had always wanted to document them and asked Christine, another family member actively recording Greig/Waddell family history, to explore what might be done. Together they transcribed and edited the letters into this book which gives the reader a unique insight into what life was like when their forbears first came to Moruya in the mid 19th century and the concern that their relatives back home felt for them.
