With the gathering together of so many Scotsmen at the sports on the Park on Monday, we expected to hear the skirl of the pipes.

Amongst the death notices in a recent issue of the “Sydney Morning Herald” was that of Mrs. J. Strahan who died suddenly on the 16th inst. in the Manilla District Hospital. After the death of her husband, Mr. John Strahan, the well-known orchardist of Mynora, Mrs. Strahan opened the Shamrock Tea Rooms in Vulcan St., which she successfully conducted for some time. Disposing of her Mynora property she then went to Sydney and later on to the North Coast. …

A quiet wedding was celebrated on 27th ult. in All Saints Church, Bodalla, by Rev. Payne Lewis, the contracting parties being Martha Frederica, third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Berriman, of “Brighton,” Bodalla, and John Henry, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Couch, of Rose Bay, Sydney. … The reception was held in Turlinjah Hall where about 30 guests were received by the bride’s mother. Later the happy couple left by car to spend their honeymoon in Narooma and South Coast towns.

Through the intervention of that live institution the Mogo Progress Association, approval has been given for the establishment of a public telephone office at the residence of Mr. A. E. Lavis, Mosquito Bay, via Bateman’s Bay.

A twin-screw steamer was launched by Ailsa Shipbuilding Company, Ltd. Ayr, on December 18, for the Illawarra and South Coast Steam Navigation Company, Ltd., being named Bergalia. … She will carry about 400 tons d.w., and special provision is made for the refrigeration of perishable cargo. A large insulated butter-room is built on the main deck forward. Two powerful steam winches, steam windlass, and other deck machinery of the most modern type are fitted, for the rapid handling of cargo. The propelling machinery is designed to give the vessel a speed of 10 knots.

ssBergalia rudder at Narooma

Deep sorrow was felt in this district on Tuesday when news reached here of the death of Mr. John O’Reilly, of Cobargo. Deceased was well known along the South Coast, having conducted auction sales from Berry to Bega. … Mr. O’Reilly, who was 51 years of age, was a native of Cobargo. He married Miss Elizabeth Byrnes, of Cadgee, sister of Mrs. Quilter of this town.

Another motor car accident occurred on the Moruya Road on Monday. The spot is known as the Devil’s Elbow, and although not as dangerous as Doulette’s or Polwomerah, it needs some widening. The car hit the bank on a short turn and was hurled down the side. The occupants escaped with a severe shaking and the car sustained small damage.
