Showcasing some of the finest linen in the Moruya Museum’s collection

Linen has history extending back over 30,000 years and is still today used in high end clothing and home fabrics.

A century ago this amazing fabric was used in everything from fancy bloomers to starched nurses uniforms and tablecloths, often beautifully adorned with exquisite needlework.

Over the past 30 years the end use for linen has changed dramatically. Approximately 70% of linen production in the 1990s was for apparel textiles, whereas in the 1970s only about 5% was used for fashion fabrics (Wikipedia).

The term “Linen” is now often used generically to describe any articles which were traditionally made of flax-based linen but these days made from a variety of fibres, for example table, bathroom and bedding articles as well as lingerie and shirts.

Today, linen/cotton blends are also frequently used. In recent years there has been an upsurge in linen’s popularity for bedding and fashion applications.
