Holiday Rentals, Farm Visits and French Movie Stars – 5 December, 1914

A RARE CHANCE – The two pilot cottages at the Heads have been placed in the hands of the local Crown Land Agent, Mr. Dixon, as agent for the Resumed Properties Department. Mr. Dixon is prepared to let one or both of the cottages for a week or longer at a reasonable rental to approved tenants. Anyone anxious for a holiday at the Heads during the summer months should interview the agent at once as the cottages have already been secured by different parties for various periods. 5/12/1914

TRIP TO BODALLA – At the invitation of Mr. D. Hutchison, manager of the Bodalla Estate, the members of the committee of the Moruya Agricultural Society, and certain other gentlemen journeyed to Bodalla on Wednesday last and were entertained by that gentleman in inspecting the estate, which is at present enjoying the benefits of a wonderfully good season. Mr. Hutchison met the party at Trunketabella at about 10.30 am., and they were shown over the cheese factory, and from there inspected the herds at Greenway, Gannon’s Point, Home Farm, Old Bodalla and Comerang. They were then entertained with a sumptuous repast at the Bodalla Arms, and later on witnessed a spaying demonstration at the yards above the village. On the way back from the yards they were taken into Mr. Hutchison’s house, and Mrs. Hutchison dispensed afternoon tea. The outing was brought to a close at 5 o’clock, when all assembled at the Bodalla Arms and drank Mr. Hutchison’s health, and wound up with “He’s a jolly good fellow” and three cheers. 5/12/1914

SOMETHING SPECIAL – Patrons of the Empire Picture Palace should secure their seats early to-night, as the proprietor will unreel a particularly lengthy film, a 6000 feet sensational drama entitled “A Story of a Siren.” The leading characters in this thrilling story will be portrayed by the world-famed artists, Mdlle. Mistinguett and Mons. Henri Krauss. 5/12/1914

TELEGRAPHIC NEWS – Mr Fisher delivered his Budget speech in the House of Representatives last night. The revenue for the year was estimated at £24,495,401, expenditure £37,583,715, the deficit being £13,088,314. To assist meeting the deficiency Treasury Bills will be issued to the amount of £2,583,214. It is also intended to raise a million by probate and succession duties and £1,100,000 by land tax. During the year the Commonwealth would receive ten and a half millions on a loan from England, £250,000 provided for the construction of a new light cruiser.
An Australian expeditionary force totalling 42,000 men would cost £9,800,000. During the current month 13,000 troops would leave Australia. 3000 will be sent every two months.
The new Tariff introduced is estimated to produce a million and a quarter Excise, and a quarter of a million Customs. 5/12/1914

Copies of local newspapers from the 1860s to date can be viewed at the society’s Family History Research Centre (Ph 4474 3224) situated at the rear of the Pioneer Museum in Campbell St. Moruya (mdhs.org.au).
